Why Halo Infinite is the LAST HALO title for TEN YEARS

Halo Infinite will be the final standalone halo for the next ten years, according to studio head Chris Lee. That means no Halo Infinite 2 for the foreseeable future. But why? Today, we explore the evolution of games that led us to this point; why Halo Infinite is looking like a 'Game as a Service' (aka a 'live game'); and what 343 are likely looking to accomplish with this model.
The delivery methods of video games have changed a great deal in the past few decades. We've transitioned from physical media, to digital distribution. With the immediacy of the internet, our expectations of what a game should be are evolving. Game studios are attempting to keep up with - and take advantage of - this change in player attitudes. This has led to the evolution of the 'Games-as-a-Service' model (GaaS), opening vast opportunities for investments and monetisation in long-lasting games. This can benefit the players if done right, creating a vast network of game experiences that keeps growing. 343 Industries is looking to take advantage of this for Halo Infinite, creating a singular "platform" with which to grow the franchise.
