From the vibrant square and cobbled streets of Old Havana, we soon found ourselves standing before the magnificent Havana Cathedral.
Built between 1748 and 1777, the cathedral’s construction originally begun by Jesuits and later completed by the Diocese of Havana after the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish territories.
One of Havana’s most iconic landmarks, this master piece is built primarily from coral stone extracted right from the Gulf of Mexico.
As we made our way inside we were welcomed with high ceilings, wide spaces, intricate woodwork, and elegant altars adorned with gold and marble. The cathedral is said to have housed the remains of Christopher Columbus for over a century before their transfer to Spain.
The cathedral’s unique façade is made of coral stone sourced from the Gulf of Mexico, with embedded fossils still visible in its weathered surface. Inside, we were greeted by soaring ceilings, elegant marble altars, and intricately carved woodwork that reflect centuries of craftsmanship and faith.
Today, it remains one of Cuba’s most iconic religious and historical landmarks. It’s a place where history, faith, and artistry come together and echoes a powerful blend of spiritual devotion, colonial legacy, and the enduring spirit of the Cuban people.
