Kickstarter is one of the most popular crowdfunding platforms for launching new ideas. From creative projects to new products, creators have been taking their visions before the crowd and getting the funding to bring them to live. Have an idea for a product or business, but need funding? If traditional funding methods like loans or angel investors aren’t for you, maybe you should consider the crowd.
But what sets Kickstarter apart? What makes it the right platform for some projects, but not others? In this video we’ll break down the things that make Kickstarter stand out so you can make an informed decision about whether it’s the platform for your venture.

01:43 – Projects Must Create Something to Share With Others
Clearly communicate what “thing” you’ll be sharing with the world. Whether it’s an experience or a physical thing, something must be created.
02:17 – Statistics Must Be Honest and Clear
Whatever stats, numbers or information you share about your project must be honest and clear. Don’t deceive backers with half-truths or hyperbolic statistics.
02:47 – No Fundraising for Charity
As great as it is to raise money for charity, that’s not the purpose of Kickstarter. Campaigns must use funds to bring their projects to life. No charitable uses for campaign funds.
03:03 – No Equity
Kickstarter isn’t an equity based platform. You’re exchanging your “thing” for support. While offering a stake in your company is alluring, there are regulation platforms for those types of campaigns.
03:19 – Prohibited Items
There are a few categories of items you can’t run a Kickstarter campaign for. They include: offensive materials like hate speech or things that incite violence, alcohol, weapons, pornographic material, products that already exist, drugs, and live animals. You also can’t run a campaign for a product that claims to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent any illness or medical condition.
