South Western Railway Trains at Farnborough (Main) on February 1st 2025

Farnborough (Main) opened in 1838 by the LSWR (London South Western Railway) as just Farnborough when the SWML was opened between London and Winchfield although was extended a year later to Basingstoke.

The North Downs Line built by the South Eastern Railway opened their station as Farnborough which did cause confusion however it wasn't until 1923 when that was renamed to Farnborough North which is served by Great Western Railway services from Reading to Redhill via Guildford with Gatwick trains run through non stop there.

The LSWR station was often referred to as Farnborough (Main) although nowadays referred to by National Rail and South Western Railway eventhough it's not referred to on the station signage as such although at one time was referred to as Farnborough for Aldershot

The gap between the up and down Fast lines was in fact the site of the former island platform of the original station however was reconstructed in the early 1900s at the time when the line was quadrupled.

Today services along there are served by stopping services to Basingstoke as well as services to Portsmouth Harbour via Basingstoke and Eastleigh.

The footbridge dates from 2011 when most of the station forecourt was refurbished which include the additional of Step free access to either platform and the station around that time included a bus interchange.
