I want to start with who I am
I am autistic
I go to a specialist secondary school
I did not always have the right support
Before this I was in mainstream primary school
And it took years to be accepted
YEARS
Years of being misunderstood
Years of being overwhelmed
Years of being told to cope in a system that clearly was not built for me
I did not suddenly become disabled one day
I did not suddenly need help
The support just took far too long to arrive
That is why I am so angry
Because what is being talked about now puts other kids exactly where I was
Or worse
I have support now
I have an EHCP
And even with that support education is still hard
So when the government talks about changing EHCPs and disabled rights I do not feel reassured
I feel alarmed
Because if it was this hard to get help under the current system what happens when it gets harder
And I need to be clear
I am not scared just for myself
I am scared for the other disabled kids
The ones still in mainstream schools struggling quietly
The ones waiting
The ones being told they are fine when they are not
The system right now is already failing
Families already wait years
Parents already have to fight constantly just to be taken seriously
Children already reach crisis point before anyone steps in
And instead of fixing that you want to change it
You want to raise thresholds
You want to standardise support
You want to make it harder to qualify for help
Disability is not standard
Autism is not standard
Trying to force disabled children into neat boxes does not make things fair
It makes children feel like they are the problem
Like they are too much
Too expensive
Too inconvenient
Are you really saying you will only help once a child completely breaks down
Once they are overwhelmed
Once they are in crisis
Because that is what this leads to
And do not pretend this is not about money
If you cut education support you will pay for it elsewhere
In mental health services
In crisis teams
In families falling apart
There are already many children telling their parents they cannot cope anymore
There are already young people feeling completely hopeless
That should be a warning
Not something to ignore
Then there is the idea of SEN hubs
One room inside a mainstream school
One room does not remove noise
One room does not remove unpredictability
One room does not make a school safe for a child who is overwhelmed the moment they arrive
If you actually cared about disabled children you would build more specialist schools
You would fund them properly
You would stop forcing children to adapt to environments that harm them
Yes it would cost money
But disabled children are not a budget issue
We are human beings
What makes this even worse is that these decisions are being made without listening
You are not listening to disabled kids
You are not listening to parents
You are not listening to teachers who see the damage every day
You do not understand what we have been through
You do not see the exhaustion after school
You do not see how much effort it takes just to survive the day
And yet you decide anyway
I am not accepting that
Not now
Not ever
If you want to improve the system speak to us
Actually listen
Stop making disabled children feel like a burden for needing help
Because behind every EHCP is a child trying their absolute best
And behind every child is a family holding everything together
And if it was not for my teachers and my parents I would not be here today
They believed me when the system did not
They supported me when things were hard
Support is not paperwork
Support is people
And you do not get to take that away and call it progress
