There are four species of Waterleaf that live in the Eastern United States. We look at all four to help you learn to differentiate them from one another. We also talk a little about resources to help you identify plants, such as field guides, keys, and apps. (See link below for the Vascular Plants of Ohio.)
Hydrophyllum appediculatum (Great Waterleaf, Appendaged Waterleaf)
Lavender flowers held above the leaves, leaves about as long as wide, small leaf-like appendage between sepals
Hydrophyllum canadense (Canada Waterleaf, Maple-leaf Waterleaf, Broad-leaved Waterleaf, Bluntleaf Waterleaf)
Generally white flowers held below the upper-most leaves, leaves about as long as wide and palmately veined, tends to grow in colonies
Hydrophyllum macrophyllum (Large-Leaf Waterleaf, Largeleaf Waterleaf)
White flowers held above the leaves, leaves about twice as long as wide, flower stem hairy
Hydrophyllum virginianum (Virginia Waterleaf)
Purple flowers held above the leaves, leaves about twice as long as wide, flower stem smooth or with only short hairs.
