This test is known as a blow off test.
It enables you to know the extent of wear and tear of the engine block cylinder bores and the piston.
when the cap blows off, this means that the compression is leaking because the piston rings cannot seal the gases completely.
This is caused by a worn out cylinder bore which makes it become wider than the piston rings can seal... and due to this wear, the piston rings become smaller hence causing the loss of compression from the crankcase.
