A follow-up on last summer's tour of the Green Fortress - the hedge - the 'Gebueck' around the Rheingau county in the upper middle Rhine valley in Germany.
We are crossing the Ts and dotting the Is on the western end of the old Rheingau border, following the ancient hedge from Sauerthal to its western-most point before it descends into the Rhine valley at Lorchhausen.
The Gebueck (The Bendings) was arguably the most formidable organic fortification of its type and kind - A hedge made of trees, completely impenetrable with the means of the day, some 50 m wide and 30 km long. It protected the Rheingau county, now part of a UNESCO world heritage site, for some 600 years until 1771 when it was finally given up and mostly destroyed.
