Spoon had just flown into Vienna from LA a few hours before, and then an 8 hour drive to Slovenia for this festival.
He had just recovered from throat cancer, and you can hear the pain in his voice.
In the 40s and 50s this man was king of the blues, he recorded with the greats,
Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Gerry Mulligan, he was the bridge of the southern bluesmen, to the Hip west coast Jazz blues scene of the 40s and 50s and it was a great honor to play with him.
I called him 2 weeks after this show, and we really hit it off, he said I reminded him of Ben Webster on Tenor Sax, which was a thrill. He wanted to bring me on his next tour which was to be in Greece,
The next week after our conversation, while driving home from a gig, it was announced he had passed away that day.
I'll always treasure this concert, and am thankful for this video footage for history. When he sang "Going down slow"
there was a line that says "When you see my mother, tell her to pray for me"
I got goose bumps and felt the presence of the Lord, I talked to him about it after the show, and he said he felt the same experience. He was only here for a month after that show, and I know that
he will be missed
