August Gottfried Ritter (1811 - 1885): Sonate No. 3 a-Moll Op. 23 - dedicated to Franz Liszt
This is one of the most exciting German organ Sonatas from the Romantic period after Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The form of the Sonata is a "quasi una fantasia" in the Beethoven-tradition with the elements Sonata-mouvement, Recitativ, Cavantine, Chorale, Variations, symphonic Fugue. The introducing motiv of the Sonata is present in nearly all its parts. The Fugue becomes soon a Toccata as the final of the piece. The style of the Sonata is very familar to the pinao-music of Robert Schumann.
Ritter was organist of the cathedral at Magdeburg. He had a baroque organ at the time when composed his four organ Sonatas. The fact that he composed romantic Sonatas which are playable on a baroque organ is unique.
Organ at Kampen (NL) 1790 F. C. Schnitger (Hauptwerk, Milan Digital Audio).
