Kate’s Coffee
It’s often noted that the simplest of life‘s pleasures provide the most joy. That would be true of a good cup of coffee.
Back in the mid-1970s when the Drifters started hanging out with Kate, she was married to Don Coffin and lived in a big old house with her children in Santa Rosa. We would often visit with her and sleep in the living room.
She was not a complicated person. She had beautiful down-home tendencies and lived a simple life, or least as simply as she could.
Her priorities were her children, family, and music.
Kate also cherished her friendships and her friends. There is no place where that is more evident than in the way she treated us, the Cache Valley Drifters. She was as kind as you could think; as sweet as you could believe. She never had a cross word or a mean thing to say about anybody.
When it came to us, her personal fun devils, she possessed one large concern. It was a worry of hers because it was a major concern of ours…the first cup of coffee of the day.
As I said, Kate was not a complicated person so she didn’t go to the Coffee Bean for the gourmet stuff. There were no Starbucks in those days. Nope, she had the big old 5 pound can of MJB. That kind of bean was something we Drifters typically avoided. We liked the dark, strong coffee bean, not the canned stuff.
But in true Kate fashion, she fixed the issue by adding one ingredient (and by making sure it was very strong). The ingredient was cinnamon…and an endemic measure of kindness.
Kate’s coffee ended up being the best coffee because a cup of kindness from the hand of a friend is the best way to start any day.
She was a great lady, and we are all blessed to have known her.
