The Bleriot 5190 Santos Dumont was France's answer to transatlantic airmail in the 1930s. This massive parasol-wing flying boat featured an unusual submarine-like hull design with four Hispano-Suiza engines. Named after aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont, it made its first flight in 1933 and completed 38 Atlantic crossings between 1934-1937. With pilot Lucien Bossoutrot at controls, it carried France's entire transatlantic mail at one crossing per week. Despite its success, a cancelled government contract bankrupted Blériot Aéronautique and led to Louis Blériot's death in 1936.
