Описание: MotoGP's recent decision to remove Phillip Island from the race calendar marks the end of an era for an iconic round of the premier motorcycle championship that has witnessed some truly awesome duels over the years. For #flashbackfriday we take a look back at the final round of the 1990 FIM World Bike GP Championship, which took place at the Phillip Island circuit, Australia and was a perfect example of just how awe inspiring two-stroke, 500cc road racing could be given the right conditions.

The race boiled down to a battle of two Aussie Aces in the young rising star, Mick Doohan, who gave more than a hint of his future greatness during the race and an established Champion in Wayne Gardner (1987 World Champion) who was nursing injury and dealing with a damaged fairing. This was easily the best race of 1990, and probably one of the best races of the 1990's.

Doohan (Rothmans Honda), full of grit and determination after his win in Hungary, set out to prove to the sceptics that it wasn't a fluke, while his compatriot, the somewhat battered warrior Wayne Gardner (Rothmans Honda), had his eye squarely on the champagne. Americans Wayne Rainey (1990 World Champion), Kevin Schwantz and Eddie Lawson, made up the pack of top runners and what brilliant riding they produced!

In this clip we join the closing stages of the race as Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner slugged it out for victory, with both men almost being ejected from their bikes as they pushed themselves and their bikes to absolute limit!
