Pidurangala is a massive rock formation about 199 meters high, located just north of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. It’s famous for its ancient cave temple, the reclining Buddha statue, and its close historical connection to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The hike is more challenging than Sigiriya but takes only around 30 minutes, and the reward is a stunning panoramic view of Sigiriya and the surrounding area.
Briefly, when King Kashyapa arrived in Sigiriya in the 5th century, he found that Sigiriya was already a monastery complex.
Since he wanted to build a fortress there, he offered the monks a similar monastery nearby, here at Pidurangala Rock.
According to legend, he offered a “golden monastery,” known as Aran Gala, which later became Pidurangala—meaning “offered piles of gold.”
The monks agreed, and a Buddhist monastery was built among these caves and rocks.
Today, what remains is the ancient cave temple and the reclining Buddha that you pass on the way up.
