VISITING THE K&ESR: Today, I’m thrilled to take you along on my Kent and East Sussex Railway day trip, which turned out to be an unforgettable blend of history, scenic countryside, and a healthy dose of steam locomotive magic.
My journey started at the charming Tenterden Town Station, where I hopped onto the 10:20 service pulled by a classic 0-6-0ST Austerity steam locomotive. The station atmosphere, complete with vintage signs and staff in period uniforms, radiated a heartwarming sense of heritage. Even though it was a grey, overcast day, the weather only added to the cozy vibe of the adventure and Britishness that lay ahead. Plus, there’s something about the contrast of steam and overcast skies that makes for an incredibly atmospheric setting.
Once we got going, the gentle rocking of the carriages - nearly 100 years old, by the way - along the tracks made it feel like the countryside was rolling right up to my window to say hello. The smell of coal smoke and steam wafted through the air, evoking a sense of wonder that you just can’t replicate on a modern train, especially not Thameslink at least! It’s these little details that make the trip truly memorable.
Our route took us through Rolvenden and Wittersham Road, before making a short stop at Northiam. Each station had its own unique charm, and I couldn’t help but record video whenever we paused. The volunteers and staff were so friendly and jovial and I even had the opportunity to hop up on the footplate on both locomotives, an experience that really let me appreciate the power (and hard work) behind these steam engines. Feeling the heat from the firebox and seeing firsthand how the engine operates gave me a much deeper connection to the world of steam.
Eventually, we reached the end of the line at Bodiam, famous for its Hub Café and Gift Shop, the perfect spot to refuel with a warm drink and a sweet treat. The grey skies couldn’t dampen our spirits one bit. After our quick break, we took the chance to explore Bodiam Castle, just a short stroll from the station. If you appreciate medieval architecture, this place is a must-see: its imposing towers and moat look like something straight out of a fairy tale. Coupled with the heritage railway journey, visiting Bodiam Castle felt like a double whammy of British history in one day; a real treat for any curious traveler.
The fun didn’t stop there, though. After a lovely afternoon at Bodiam Castle, it was time to catch a return train, this time an A1X 0-6-0T “Terrier” engine. This switch offered a new perspective and showed me just how many different types of heritage locomotives are cared for along the Kent and East Sussex Railway. Chugging back toward Tenterden, we passed by the same rolling fields, quaint farms, and winding roads that seemed even more enchanting under the gentle haze of an overcast sky. Moments like this remind you that a steam locomotive experience isn’t just about the train; it’s about soaking up the entire journey and the surroundings.
By the time we arrived back at Tenterden, I still didn’t want the day to end. Thankfully, there was more to see and do right at the station. I made a point to check out the Railway Museum (though I didn’t film there this time). It offers a fascinating glimpse into the railway’s long and storied past, complete with historical photos, artifacts, and exhibits that bring old-time travel to life. For those who love souvenirs, the gift shop is stocked with everything from postcards to charming railway-themed keepsakes. And if you’re craving a bite or a hot drink, the tea room is waiting to serve up a dose of comfort. There’s even a small model railway on-site that’s perfect for keeping the kids (and the young at heart) entertained.
All in all, this Kent and East Sussex Railway day trip exceeded every expectation I had. From riding in carriages nearly a century old, to indulging in the sights and sounds of steam, to exploring Bodiam Castle, it was the kind of day that lingers in your memory long after you’ve stepped off the train. If you enjoyed coming along on this historic UK rail travel journey, please like the video, comment with your favorite heritage railway adventures (or ones you’d love to try), and subscribe for more travel and train-related content. Next time I'll be back on my model railway Shunting Layout, to tend to the control box.
