Last year was a big year for upping the power in my Ford Focus RS MK3.

I went from the decent Mountune FPM375 to the hands down way better MSD400 as part of the MSD multi-maps setup, followed by the excellent MSD420 when I had the rest of the required hardware in place.

I have then been running on MSD420 since, maybe around 8 months or so, and I have been very happy with it, pickup feels faster and more eager so there is nothing not to like!

Having the full setup at 420hp is really a new experience over stock and even FPM375! The sound is very much like a rally car with an epic soundtrack of loud pops and crackles along with lots of corresponding burbles to create the whole sonic package. The speed that can be achieved is immense!

It was known and clear from the get go that MSD offered two custom map revisions as part of the package, I just haven't got round to it until now and I wasn't rushing all this time because the standard MSD420 really was great, but now I really have gotten the itch to see what a tune that is honed to my hardware setup would be like - especially given that I have a lot more hardware upgrades over the minimum required for MSD420!

The process is very simple:

set up the Cobb Accessport to log certain parameters specified by MSD
find a straight, flat, empty road
start logging on the Cobb Accessport
do at least one 3rd gear pull all the way to the limiter
retrieve the logs and email them to MSD
get a new custom map revision emailed back
load it onto the Cobb Accessport and then map to the car - done!

I go through the process twice and now have a fully custom map which is awesome!

It really adds a nice cherry on top of the already excellent MSD420 map, adding extra torque where it really counts and where you really feel it - in the mid range - so the power is even more linear and feeling like it pulls like a train!

One issue I did have in the process was my NGK iridium spark plugs. They were a year old and originally came pre-gapped by Mountune so I figured they would be fine - not so much!

Stu noticed some misfires when hitting the limiter so suggested taking a look and indeed all the gaps were out of spec - I show you in this video just how much - so I decide to change the plugs out for new ones that are pre-gapped by MSD and the difference in smoothness is eye opening!

The bottom line - check your spark plug gaps!

All the temperature protection features of the management system are retained and further optimised to suit the vehicles new power output. If temperatures get too high the ECU will actively lower your available throttle opening and boost pressures as well as add fuel to cool things down until such time as the temperatures are back within safety parameters. So there we have it - a fully custom map for my hardware setup, all without having to drive hundreds of miles - excellent!

This is now the pinnacle of tuning on my Ford Focus RS MK3 unless I go for more extreme hardware mods such as a big turbo - should I...?! Let me know in the comments!
