A whimsical look at a day in the life of Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum's Belsnickel.
The name means "Nickolas in furs" and describes the Pennsylvania German character who roamed the Southeastern Pennsylvania countryside at Christmastime in the 18th - early 20th centuries. Dressed in furs and disguised with soot, messy hair, a beard and/or an eyepatch, he carried a sack of nuts, candies, and goodies for the good children and smacked the naughty children with a switch. The tradition evolved into "belsnickeling," where the belsnickel (or groups of belsnickels) would come to houses and beg for cookies or other treats. Eventually, the Santa Claus tradition overtook the Belsnickel and so, today, he remains a Christmastime oddity.
