Rondo Hatton was an actor in horror films in the 1930s and 40s. He got the acting gigs because of his unique physical appearance resulting from acromegaly. Acromegaly develops in adulthood and is caused by a pituitary tumor. The condition causes the body to continue growing. Facial features such as the jaw, lips, nose, ears, brow, and skull are notably affected. Hands and feet get disproportionately larger. Not visible, but the most dangerous growth is into internal organs. Hatton died at 51with heart failure. Although diagnosed early, apparently there was no treatment for acromegaly at that time. There are good treatments now.
I was recently diagnosed with acromegaly, after having the condition for around 30 years. I had surgery to remove the tumor and am taking medications to keep my hormones in balance. This stops the abnormal growth, but most of the damage is not reversible.
Part of my way of dealing with this is making drawings that shed light on this condition. Hopefully more people will be diagnosed early. Early diagnosis is key for acromegaly. So, if you see these signs in yourself or someone you know, consider if it might be acromegaly. Two common signs are the need to increase ring size and increased shoe size.

Note 1: I try to show my work process as accurately as possible. However, I do take some liberties with video editing. For instance, almost all my videos use time-lapse to speed up the process. I would like to show an entire drawing in real time, but even my simplest drawings can take a full day--major drawings can take one to two weeks. No one wants to watch me draw for two weeks. Also, some of my edits are just for my own enjoyment. Video is a hobby for me, and I like to experiment.

Note 2: I call my drawing medium scratchboard, and it is. However, a more accurate description of my technique would be "pen and ink on white scratchboard." I work on white scratchboard, and I draw with pen and ink the parts that have a value of 50 percent gray or less. For areas that are 50 percent gray or darker, I block in with solid black ink and scratch in white lines for detail.

Note 3: I am showing how I work. However, although I have been an illustrator for over 35 years, there may be times when I am doing it wrong or not doing it in the best way.
