Presentation by Joseph Humire, Executive Director of the Center for a Secure Free Society
Mr. Humire will discuss the roots of the Venezuelan crisis, its geopoltical complexity and potential solutions that the US and the international community might pursue.
Joseph M. Humire is the Executive Director of the Center for a Secure Free Society. A global security expert specializing on transnational threats in the Western Hemisphere, he provides regular briefings on international terrorism, transnational organized crime, Islamism and Iran’s influence in Latin America to various entities within the U.S. Department of Defense and Intelligence Community, as well as prominent think tanks and universities around the world. He testifies frequently before the U.S. Congress on national security issues and has also testified before the European, Canadian, and Andean Parliament, as well as the Argentine and Peruvian Congress. In 2016, Mr. Humire served as an expert witness in an important terrorism trial in Lima, Peru.
Mr. Humire publishes regularly for Fox News, the Washington Times and The Hill and has featured scholarly articles in the Small Wars Journal and the Journal of International Security Affairs, among others. He is also a frequent national security commentator for a variety of major English and Spanish language media, including Univision, Telemundo, and CNN en Español, as well as Fox News, Canada’s CTV and China’s Global Television Network.
Mr. Humire released his first book, Iran’s Strategic Penetration of Latin America, published by Lexington Books, in October 2014. More recently, he published a major monograph titled, “After Nisman: How the death of a prosecutor revealed Iran’s growing influence in the Americas.”
Prior to SFS, Mr. Humire served in the U.S. Marine Corps with combat tours in Iraq and a multinational training exercise UNITAS in Latin America and the Caribbean. After leaving the military, he attended George Mason University, where he studied Global Affairs and Economics. He began building SFS’s global network of more than 100 security scholars in close to 30 countries as the Director of Institute Relations at the Atlas Economic Research Foundation. His unique blend of military experience, economics education, and expertise in asymmetric warfare–makes him a rising star in U.S. foreign policy and national security.
