After Melbourne, two questions were sitting unanswered in every F1 paddock conversation. First: how did Mercedes end up almost a full second faster than Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull in qualifying — the kind of margin they hadn't enjoyed since the darkest years of the hybrid era? And second: McLaren, Williams, and Alpine all run the same Mercedes engine. So why were they nowhere near it?
This video answers both.
The first answer is buried inside the engine itself. The 2026 regulations capped compression ratios at 16:1 — but specified that compliance checks would be run on a cold engine. Mercedes exploited the fact that metal expands at operating temperature. Using specific alloys engineered to expand in precise amounts when hot, their combustion chamber shrinks on track — pushing the effective compression ratio well beyond what the cold test ever catches. Estimates inside the paddock put the power gain at around 30 horsepower. The FIA has now moved to close it, effective Monaco weekend. But for the first seven or eight races of 2026, that window is open.

The second answer is harder to fix. Even with identical hardware and identical software mandated by the rules, Mercedes' customer teams were three to six-tenths per lap behind the works car. The reason: energy management knowledge. We break down the specific Albert Park qualifying data — how Piastri lost six-tenths to Russell across a single sector at turns 8 to 11, accounting for nearly three-quarters of his total lap deficit — and explain why that gap comes entirely from understanding how to operate the power unit, not from any difference in the components themselves. Knowledge that Mercedes built over years and has no obligation to share.
Two mysteries. Both answered.
