Percy has been working at the coal mines for several weeks and is fed up with the work. Each day, his driver informs the little green engine that they are back at it the following day. The freight cars constantly teasing Percy each and every day doesn't help either. Later, Percy meets up with Bertie who tries to cheer him up, to no avail. A few hours later, Percy sees Toby at the station and tells the tram engine how boring the work has been for him. Toby reminds Percy that with all the work that he's been doing, he'll soon know more about cars than any other engine. One day, Percy is hauling some cars up to the yards and they constantly tease him, but he finds it annoying, so Percy keeps shouting at them to be quiet but there's then there's trouble. The lead car has a weak coupling and then, they break away from Percy! The cars roll backwards down the hill with ever increasing speed and then disappear around a bend. Percy comes rushing down the hill and his driver alerts the signalman and the yard foreman warns Sir Topham Hatt that the cars are heading for a big hill which should slow them down but they may roll back again, which could cause them to crash into the village down below the hill. Percy, Bertie and Sir Topham Hatt chase after them and soon, the cars roll to a standstill thanks to the hill. Workmen, who were aboard Bertie, manage to put chocks of wood under the cars' wheels so that they can't roll away anymore. After that, Percy arrives and decides that a really useful engine should never be taken by surprise.
