Choosing the right planter pots for your garden can feel overwhelming — especially with so many options available! 🌿
Whether you’re planting annuals, perennials, houseplants, or building a large container garden, the right pot makes a huge difference in plant health and long-term success.
Today we’re breaking down the most common types of planter pots including plastic, composite, terra cotta, clay, ceramic, and metal to help you decide which one works best for YOUR garden.
There are plenty of planter pot choices for your garden — but which one best fits your needs can be overwhelming at times.
Plastic planters are typically budget-friendly, durable, and lightweight. They hold moisture well and have improved greatly in appearance over the years. While they once looked plain, today’s plastic planters come in a variety of textures and finishes, often mimicking ceramic, stone, or even metal so convincingly that it’s hard to spot the difference. Use caution as over time with extreme cold or hot temps, plastic can become very brittle and crack.
Composite is more durable than plastic but can also start to deteriorate over time. Use caution as over time with extreme cold or hot temps, composite can become very brittle and crack.
Terra cotta, Italian for "baked earth," is a versatile, reddish-brown, unglazed or glazed ceramic fired at low temperatures. Terra Cotta offers a timeless, traditional look and is usually reasonably priced. However, it is more fragile than ceramic or plastic. Because terra cotta is porous, it draws moisture out of the soil, meaning plants may require more frequent watering. This makes it especially suitable for drought-tolerant plants like succulents and cacti. Its porous nature also allows moisture to seep into the walls, which can freeze in colder temperatures and lead to cracking.
Ceramic planters tend to be the priciest option and are also the heaviest. That added weight can be helpful when supporting a top-heavy plant, handling windy areas, or keeping pots steady around lively pets. Ceramic is generally weather-resistant and can tolerate freezing temperatures, as long as the planter’s opening is wider than its base so expanding soil has room to move upward. It also retains moisture better than terra cotta.
Metal is another option but can be quite pricey, but the rusting appearance is beautiful and the metal will last for many years with no risk of cracking or chipping like all the other options.
