L’artiste plasticien thaïlandais Apichatpong Weerasethakul est davantage connu comme réalisateur. Considéré comme le plus brillant de sa génération dans son pays, il est reconnu internationalement après avoir remporté de multiples récompenses dont la Palme d’Or au Festival de Cannes en 2010. Nous découvrons dans cette première vidéo comment, né de parents médecins dans une petite ville du nord de la Thaïlande, il a pu trouver sa voie. Il nous explique pourquoi, voulant d’abord devenir vétérinaire, il a suivi des études d’architecture avant de devenir l’artiste et le cinéaste d’aujourd’hui.

“Je sais qu'ils auraient voulu que l'un de nous reprenne leur activité car ils avaient une clinique en ville. Mais ils ne m'ont jamais poussé à suivre cette voie. Même si la médecine a pu m'intéresser à une période. J'ai même voulu devenir vétérinaire. Et même dentiste…”
A propos de ses parents

“Les histoires de fantômes et la science-fiction. Ces genres ont l'air éloignés, mais pour moi font partie du même univers. Un univers magique et parfois intangible. J'adore cette notion qui n'est pas dans le présent mais dans les souvenirs ou dans le futur.”

“J'ai toujours pensé que le divertissement, que ce soit les films ou le théâtre, faisait partie de la théorie architecturale. J'ai donc fait mes études dans ce domaine et je me suis rendu compte que c'était un formidable processus d'apprentissage. Apprendre le cinéma à travers l'architecture, tout ce qui est lié au temps et à l'espace, est tout à fait pertinent.”
