Описание: After more than sixty years of dispossession following the UN establishment of the state of Israel, including more than four decades of Israeli occupation, Palestinians are now seeking UN membership and recognition of their long-promised state within the 1967 borders. Whether or not the vote takes place in September as planned, this initiative represents an important step forward for the Palestinian people, who are native to the land in question. People for Justice in Palestine present a panel discussion featuring Dr. Patrick Hitchon, Shams Ghoneim, Dr. Ahmed El Khaldy, and Dr. John Dabeet. Patrick Hitchon was born in Amman, Jordan in 1948, of a Palestinian mother and British father. Had it not been for the forced exodus of the Palestinians, he, like his sister, would have been born in Jerusalem, where his uncle still lives. He attended the American University of Beirut and left Lebanon in 1974. He currently lives and works in Iowa City. Shams Ghoneim was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. She is the coordinator of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, Iowa Chapter, and former President of the Johnson County Consultation of religious communities. She serves on the ACLU-IA Board of Directors and is a community member of the Iowa City Press Citizen Editorial Board. John Dabeet is a professor of economics and a Palestinian Christian who has been closely involved with Palestinian governance in general and the statehood initiative in particular. He has recently returned from work on this issue in Palestine. He is the founder of ampal.net. Additional information can be found at the PJP and ampal websites.
