STORYLINE:
Former guerrilla leader Hashim Thaci was elected Kosovo's new president by the country's parliament on Friday.
The voting in the 120-seat Parliament was held without opposition lawmakers, many of whom were suspended from participation after disrupting the work in Parliament with tear gas.
Later that day, dozens of opposition supporters protesting Thaci's election clashed with police in Pristina.
Thaci, whose party controls the majority in Kosovo's parliament with the Democratic League of Kosovo and smaller coalition partners, will assume a five year mandate on 6 April.
His election was fiercely contested by the opposition, which accuse him of deep-seated corruption and for deals with Serbia that give more autonomy to Kosovo's Serb minority.
Many leading figures within the opposition were partners with Thaci during the war, but later turned against him, accusing him of being power-hungry and corrupt.
Critics also say the 47-year-old, who led the fighters of Kosovo's successful separatist war against Serbia in 1998-99, is not a unifying individual, which is what the Kosovo constitution requires.
