In a sudden and seemingly panicked move, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who had recently issued inflammatory threats against several countries—including the United States—issued an apology to the U.S. within a matter of minutes. He claimed that his earlier statements were based on misinformation and subsequently deleted tweets in which he warned that Uganda had immediately suspended its cooperation with the United States, including military collaboration in Somalia. In those tweets, Muhoozi aaccused, without evidence, the U.S. Embassy in Uganda of assisting Bobi Wine in evading military arrest following the presidential election.
This is not the first time Muhoozi has directed threats at the United States only to retract them later. The deletion of these tweets suggests that, despite projecting a tough, unyielding public persona, he is cautious—and perhaps fearful—of potential repercussions from the U.S.
The same pattern of bravado followed by backtracking was evident domestically the night before. Muhoozi posted images of Bobi Wine’s wife, showing her appearance during a raid on her home by security forces. He later clarified that any soldier who attempted to harm her would face severe punishment. These incidents highlight a consistent contradiction: the image of a fearless strongman, contrasted with apparent caution when confronted with real power—whether internationally or domestically.
