Solo backpacking through Capitol Reef’s best trails, I tackled a 2-day loop via Chimney Rock, Lower Spring Canyon, Grand Wash Trail, Cassidy Arch Trail and Frying Pan Trail — no crowds, no retracing steps. With water cached along the route and temperatures soaring, day one brought red rock vistas, a fox standoff, and a scramble through a dramatic canyon.
