In this video following topics are discussed in detail.
When to stop irrigating wheat crop?
How to decide for last irrigation of Wheat?
What are soft dough and hard dough stages of grain development?
When to apply last irrigation to wheat grown on sandy soils?
What is milky stage of wheat grain development?
The timing of the last irrigation for wheat in Punjab, Pakistan, depends on the crop's growth stages etc. The last irrigation should be applied at the grain-filling stage (also called the dough stage). This typically occurs 30–40 days before harvest. If wheat is at the milky stage (soft grains, white inside) last irrigation should be applied only in heavy soils which retain moisture for a longer period of time like in rice zone. If wheat is at the dough stage (grains hardening, yellowing) the last irrigation is beneficial in sandy soils of Thal and Cholistan area of Punjab. In any type of soil If wheat is fully ripened (grains are hard, golden, and dry) don’t irrigate the crop otherwise it will reduce your yield and grain quality also. Weather Conditions should not be ignored while planning for last irrigation in your highly valuable wheat crop being consumed as major staple food of the country like Pakistan. If rainfall is expected, delay or avoid irrigation. Milky Stage when grains are filled with a milky liquid is very important to decide for the last irrigation in heavy textured soils but in loamy soils soft dough to hard dough stages are preferred for last irrigation. Irrigation is needed if the soil is dry to support grain filling. Soft dough stage is the condition when grains become soft but can hold shape. In Punjab, Pakistan, the last irrigation for wheat should be applied at the hard dough stage, which is typically 30–40 days before harvest. This usually falls in mid to late March for early-sown wheat (November planting) and late March to early April for late-sown wheat (December planting). One irrigation (50-60 mm) is recommended if soil moisture is low and grains are still developing, and water stress can reduce grain weight and yield. If needed, apply irrigation at the start of the soft dough stage to support grain filling. Timely last irrigation is crucial to ensure proper grain hardening and prevents grain shriveling, especially in hot weather.
