What did you think? Was this worth the effort or are plugins so much easier for this kind of low fidelity recording?
So clearly some pretty drastic differences. The Tascam gives very little character compared to the others mostly due to the use of the SM-57. I also tried to keep my playing as even as possible as to not clip too hard on any machine. You'll notice I have to scoot forward a bit while using the tape recorders with a built-in microphones as well. I got quite a bit more hiss with the Panasonic but that kind of thing can usually be notched out with EQ (or just left in for even more character!) but I didn't want to process these things too far. As I said in the outro, just light compression to match the three levels.

I used a Maxwell XLII for both of the larger recorders. Same exact tape. The micro cassette was some no name brand, NOS tape.
