In this video, author Luisa Feline Freier introduces the chapter “Immigrants’ Contribution to Development in the Global South: Comparing Policy Responses to Venezuelan Immigration in Peru and Argentina”, written with Ariel González Levaggi. Feline Freier is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, Peru, a Migration Research and Publishing High-Level Adviser of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and IDRC Chair on Forced Displacement in Latin America and the Caribbean. González Levaggi is an Associate Professor in the Political Science and International Relations Department of the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina (UCA), and Executive Secretary of its Center for International Affairs.
This chapter offers a comparative analysis of national policy responses to Venezuelan immigration in Argentina and Peru from a development perspective in the period 2015‒2020, pointing out the importance of state capacity and civil society when thinking about migration and development in the global South.
This chapter is part of the 14th thematic volume of International Development Policy: “Governing Migration for Development from the Global Souths”. This issue provides perspectives through case studies from the global South(s) focusing on the challenges and opportunities of governing migration on the subnational, national, regional and international levels.
