Seeing beloved people's beloved boats sink is hard to take. Especially when it didn't have to happen. A navigation error (inattention) put the WWII wooden boat on the rocks in Prevost Harbor near Canada.
John Wayne's 76-foot yacht Norwester sank in Washington's San Juan Islands in May of 2021.
The owners were shooting drone videos to promote the boat for charter service. The captain was cruising around Stuart Island when he ran aground on rocks at the entrance to Prevost Harbor. The passengers were rescued, but the owners weren't able to salvage the ship.
The wooden boat was built in 1932 and was used as a WWII patrol boat. It was used as a museum for movie props and other Wayne memorabilia before being converted into a high-end charter. It sank before ever seeing a paying passenger.
