Sounds, drifting somewhere far beneath a thick layer of mist, began to take shape. It was possible to distinguish voices of people conversing nearby and the noise of life-support machines. Hands and legs still didn't respond. Opening her eyes seemed an impossibly heavy task, but Aglaya had already started breathing on her own. She remembered her first conscious breath, as if emerging from the depths of the sea. The doctor opened the door to her ward, glanced at Aglaya quickly, and, assuring himself that she was still in a coma, called someone in the corridor:
