Inga Somdyala is an interdisciplinary artist based in Cape Town who holds a master’s in fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (2019). He leverages his expertise to hold space for nuanced explorations into South African identities post apartheid. In this interview, he talks about his site-specific commissioned artwork that is on view in 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙮 exhibition.
The breathtaking installation visually and metaphorically links the different exhibition themes through a single red sail, anchored by counterweights of sea salt. It slices through the space, connecting the ground with the sky. The work offers a poignant dialogue between individual and collective memory through its evocative linkage to South African sea-faring colonial histories.
In his practice, Inga creates a space for contemplation, inviting viewers to navigate the complexities of history and contemporary life in South Africa. His work weaves together personal experiences with broader cultural, social, and political themes, using diverse mediums to reflect on the interplay between past and present. His work aims to engage with the emotional and mental.
