The IDEAL EZ-Check® receptacle tester is our catalog number 61-035 and is proudly made in the USA. Electrician’s and home inspectors use it to verify an electrical receptacle is wired properly.
The tester indicates the presence of faulty wiring in 3 wire 120 Volt receptacles and has a non-slip ergonomic design for maximum comfort, bright premium lights provide easy to read test results in all lighting conditions and is in a tough impact-resistant case. Simply plug the tester into an electrical outlet and the tester’s bright indicator bulbs will light indicating correct polarity, open ground, reverse polarity and other circuit conditions. It is a great way of quickly identifying wiring errors at electrical outlets in a building.
Before using the tester always test on a known live circuit to assure the unit is operating properly.
Here I have the EZ Check tester plugged into an electrical outlet that is wired properly. As you can see of the 3 lights on the tester the outer two are lit up. Looking at the legend on the tester this indication represents correct wiring. Next to each condition the legend explains what the different light combinations mean and black represents a light not lit up.
The next indication the tester will give is for an open ground. When the tester indicates that only the left bulb is lit and the other 2 are not.
Reversed polarity is indicated by just the left and middle light lit on the tester and indicates your hot and neutral conductors are reversed.
An open hot in a circuit the tester will not light any of the lights on the tester.
If you have an open neutral only the right light will light up indicating a condition that needs to be addressed.
When the EZ Check sees a hot and ground conductor reversed the middle and far right lights will light up.
Finally, if the tester senses hot on the neutral conductor with a hot conductor open only the middle indicator will light up.
If the tester indicates a reverse, open or non-energized condition, or if one of the lights is on but appears dim, the person using it must then use a volt meter to sort out potential issues. There should be about 120 volts between Hot to Neutral and 120 volts Hot to Ground. Neutral to Ground should measure no more than about 2 volts.
It doesn’t take very much power to light one of the lights on the EZ Check tester, so even a very poor connection, if wired to the correct hot neutral or ground conductor, will cause the tester to light up indicating proper polarity. These simple testers will indicate correct polarity even if two branch circuit wires are just touching each other. They indicate polarity, but nothing about the quality of the electrical connection in the circuit. Further, if there are more than two mis-wired issues with the outlet, the tester will indicate only one at a time. You would have to fix the first issue and then check a second time to correct the second issue.
Current electrical codes today in the United States require 3 wire receptacles that have a separate ground wire to provide additional protection from electrical shock. Older homes and businesses built prior to this requirement may only have 2 wire receptacles without a separate ground wire. Simple testers like the EZ-Check receptacle tester are not capable of indicating bootleg or false grounds potentially used to convert 2 wire receptacles to 3 wire receptacles. To test for these ground conditions or to test the quality the connection under load other testing will be needed.
If your job requires the verification polarity AND GFCI testing, then we recommend that you consider the 61-051.
(show 61-164 on screen)
The IDEAL EZ Check receptacle tester is a simple to use tester to indicate proper wiring at a receptacle in both residential and commercial applications. It detects the most common wiring problems in 3 wire 120 volt receptacles.
I’m Ron with IDEAL and I will see you on the next one.
