A huge tunnel beneath Liverpool has been discovered this week, after being hidden for more than a century (left, top right and bottom right). Known as the Great Tunnel, it was built as part of an underground network by religious Victorian tobacco tycoon Joseph Williamson (inset). While parts have been discovered after grueling excavation works, the Great Tunnel has remained a mystery until it was found by chance this week. The businessman hired hundreds of men between 1810-40 to construct vast network under the Edge Hill part of the city. The eccentric tycoon was described as fiercely religious and was thought to have built the grid for a place for he and his followers to survive an impending Armageddon.
