The fallout was so severe that marketing materials had to be overhauled entirely to remove the stolen assets, and morale inside the studio reportedly went into "free-fall," with employees describing the internal atmosphere as "actively hostile." On top of that, paid marketing for the game was reportedly cancelled altogether ahead of launch.


When Marathon finally released on March 5, 2026, the commercial results left much to be desired for Sony. Reports confirmed the game's budget exceeded $200 million — and likely surpassed $250 million — not counting ongoing maintenance and content costs, making the numbers that followed look especially grim. Estimates put total sales at around 1.2 million copies, with the majority — roughly 70% — coming from PC via Steam rather than PlayStation 5, where only around 217,000 copies were sold, a striking underperformance for a title from a Sony-owned studio. Marathon's Steam peak of 88,000 concurrent players at launch dropped to around 20,000 within weeks, while competitor Arc Raiders was still pulling over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam even on its slower days. With Destiny 2 already struggling prior to launch and Sony having shuttered other studios like Bluepoint Games, questions are mounting about the long-term future of Bungie itself.
