Growing data suggest that exposing young children to too much screen time can have negative effects on their development, including issues with memory, attention, language skills, and social interaction. When introducing young children to coding consider using screen free devices initially such as the Code and Go Mouse and Botley the Coding Robot both from Learning Resources, as well as Fisher-Price Code-A-Pillar, there are other screen free coding devices out there to incorporate too. All of these devices were designed for young children through elementary age. However, when given specific tasks to undertake by the teacher or student led challenges these devices can incorporate varying degrees of complexity to explore a wide array of STEM practices and content from basic measurement skills to more advanced geometry principles these devices provide educational and affordable alternatives to introducing children to coding, screen-free. Lastly, these devices provide opportunities for children to strengthen and develop their 21st-century skills (creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration).
