Drift into the calm clear waters of Lough Corrib, with its over 1300 islands. Enjoy a new soothing Irish instrumental, "On The Water," as we explore this world famous salmon and brown trout fishing destination where angling is free. Explore majestic castles and ancient monasteries on the islands and shoreline. The fast-flowing River Corrib, which is one of the shortest rivers in Europe, links Lough Corrib to the Atlantic through Galway City.
One highlight on one of the islands is Hen's Castle, called after the Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley. This was originally called Cock's Castle, after Grace's first husband, Donal O'Flaherty, known as "The Cock." Donal was reportedly hot-tempered and quarrelsome and had numerous clashes with neighbouring clans, like the Joyces. He was killed in a skirmish around 1565 at his castle on the island. His death left Grace widowed while still relatively young. Rather than retreating into solitude, Grace seized control of the O'Flaherty followers and ships, strengthening her own leadership, paving the way for her rise as the famed "Pirate Queen."
After the Cock's death, the rival Joyces tried to seize the his Castle on the island in Lough Corrib. Grace took charge, rallied the O'Flaherty clan, strengthened the defenses and fought fiercely, even loading cannons herself. After her success at warding off the Joyce clan, her castle became known as Hen's Castle. The O'Flahertys took over the Castle as she parted ways from them. She expanded her fame by returning to her native Mayo, setting up her fleet at Clare island on the Atlantic and began her career as a sea captain in her own right.
Lough Corrib's secrets are being continuously unraveled through excavations, divings, and ongoing research.
