STORYLINE
More than 40 people were injured in air strikes and sporadic clashes in the Iraqi capital Baghdad between Shiite militia of the anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and US and Iraqi troops on Monday night, police said.
On Tuesday, extensive damage was visible in Baghdad's Sadr City and Kamaliyah neighbourhoods.
Residents in Sadr City said the US troops opened fire on the area and damaged buildings and shops.
Sadr City is a sprawling, impoverished Shiite district in the capital, and a stronghold of Iraq's biggest Shiite militia, the Mahdi Army of hard-line cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
In the adjacent Shiite neighbourhood of Kamaliyah, another building was destroyed, allegedly in a US air strike.
The injured were taken to the local Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib Hospital.
There was no US comment on the incidents.
