Man 1: Well, the cold weather is here. That means the heat is coming on and the heat bills are going up. You can save some cash this winter by making your home more energy efficient.

News 8 anchor Scott McDonnell takes a closer look at a program meant to give your home an overhaul on energy savings.

Scott McDonnell: From leaky doorways letting heat escape to switching out inefficient light bulbs to LEDs and CFLs. It was Debbie Carlson's daughter who enlightened her to the idea of a home energy audit.

Debbie Carlson: Just as a homeowner and going throughout the home you can feel drafts in certain areas or where you're leaking cold and hot.

Scott: The program, offered through Connecticut utility companies. For $124 a team from Solvent Home Services comes in to cut down on energy waste.

Woman 1: The bigger the reduction, the better. We go around and we seal up the home with the caulk, the foam, the weather stripping.

Scott: They'll climb around in your attic and measure the amount of air and, at the end of the day, money you're losing. It could be blowing out your windows.

Man 2: That way we can seal the home up as tight as we can.

Scott: Or heading straight down the drain.

Man 3: That's actually already at 1.5 gallons per minute.

Woman 1: We also install water saving measures, as well. These water saving measures use less gallons per minute.

Scott: If old equipment is the problem, rebates are included to help absorb the cost.

Woman 1: The rebates are designed to reduce the cost of additional upgrades such as insulation, windows, appliances, and wi-fi thermostats. The financing will help make those upgrades more affordable.

Scott: Money well spent according to homeowner Debbie.

Debbie: It's very hard to take care of some of these little tasks, as far as winterizing your door or your windows. This is a great benefit.
