Block of Brood with Horizontal Frame
This is a method that I developed after considering how to block the brood, still maintaining the good management of bees’ colony. (information method [email protected])
With this method it is possible to:
Allow the Queen to continue laying on the same frame
Allow the bees not to be subject to any form of shock due to the absence of brood
The brood will be present, with pheromones, on the nest
The queen will continue to have control of the colony
Not to take the queen out with the hands. The queen bee will remain on the nest
Be able to operate with tools available to all beekeepers, at no extra cost
To recycle the frame that has been infected by the Varroa, avoiding therefore the rebuild of another frame
The only real requirement is to create a special frame with specific characteristics.
The “ New Frame”: 7 cm high with two grooves where the other frame can be placed. Half way through the groove, there will be a nail which will allow to raise the frame. This will enable the queen to deposit on the other side of the frame.
How to do it, in 7 steps:
1. Take the frame where the queen is
2. Put the queen excluder on the nest
3. Put the “New Frame” on the nest, on top of the queen excluder, and then put the frame with the queen on top of the nails
4. After 19-20 days, take the frame out. Normally it is advisable to do so on day 19, although the birth may be anticipated if the temperature outside is high.
5. Shake the bees and the queen
6. Clean the frame, which will be full of infested brood, disinfect it and place it back on the nest
7. After 3-4 days the queen will have started the deposit and it will be possible to treat it with the “Oxalic Acid” (1 lt. water, 1 Kg. sugar, 100 gr AO).
Dose: 5 cc for each frame. 50 cc for the colony with 10 honeycombs (Api-Bioxal - CHEMICALS LAIF SRL Italy Authorized Health Ministry)
The queen, once placed back on the nest, will have no problems with being accepted; I believe this is because she has continued being part of the nest.
To recycle the frame, it is possible to use a method I developed using water.
I use a “water jet”, whose power opens the operculum without damaging the cells.
It is then possible to wash the frame with Acid, such as sodium hypochlorite, or any other suitable acid with disinfecting properties available on the market.
Lastly, place the frame back on the nest.
