When you try to heal and have healthier relationship skills narcissists react negatively, in healthy relationships personal growth and self empowerment is encouraged but not with narcissistic relationships - and this can be narcissistic parents with their adult children, narcissistic spouse or significant other, narcissistic friends and/or co workers. It doesn't matter the relationship you have with the narcissist - the reality is that when you begin to change it negatively affects the relationship.
