Why British Mechanics Hate Start-Stop Engines
There is a button on the dashboard of almost every new car sold in Britain today. It is usually marked with an A inside a circle with an arrow. Some manufacturers put it front and centre. Some tuck it away where new drivers never find it. A few brands make you scroll through a touchscreen menu to locate it. But it is always there.
That button disables start-stop. And the first thing most British mechanics do every single morning, the moment they get into a car with that system, is press it. Not because the technology does not work. Because they understand it better than almost anyone else on the road — and what they understand is something the manufacturers would very much prefer you did not think about too carefully.
Today we are going to explain exactly what start-stop technology is, why the industry pushed it so hard, what it is actually doing to your engine, and why the people who spend their professional lives fixing British cars press that disable button every time without exception.
