I was just sitting around with my looper the other day playing a simple G to C progression, and it reminded me how much music you can get out of something really basic if you approach it the right way.

In this lesson I show you a chord voicing I really like for G and a slightly different way of playing a C that has a lot more open air in it. Once you hear it, you’ll notice it immediately changes the character of the progression.

Then I show you a handful of really simple hammer-on ideas that sit right over the top of those chords. Nothing complicated, just a few notes from the G scale that add color without stepping on the vocal or the groove.

This kind of approach works great when you’re jamming with other players, backing up a singer, or just looking for ways to make your rhythm playing sound more musical.

This idea actually came from one of my original songs called “Hold Onto Your Dreams.” It’s a great reminder that sometimes the most powerful guitar parts come from keeping things simple.
