The Chi-Ha, also known as the Type 97 (from the imperial year 2597), was a Japanese medium tank. Before it was made, the Japanese army was using the Type 89, which was their main medium tank since 1935. However, in the late 1930s the Type 89 turned out to be too slow to work well in the vast areas of China, and it wasn't a good fit for the new style of fast-moving warfare that became important, especially during the invasion of Manchuria.[BHH1] They noticed this after a good amount of Type 89s couldn’t keep up with the rest of the motorized infantry anymore.
To solve the problem, they needed a new tank, which was the Type 97 Chi-Ha. And this Chi-Ha, is what we’re gonna talk about today.
