September 19, 1944 — Hill 100, Peleliu Island.
Captain Everett Pope and 24 exhausted Marines were trapped on a narrow ridge, surrounded on three sides by Japanese forces. With just 42 grenades and a few hundred rifle rounds, survival seemed impossible.
Then Pope gave an order that sounded insane: “Throw rocks first, then grenades.” Every Marine thought it was foolish — every training manual said the opposite.
But in the darkness, deception became their greatest weapon. The Japanese couldn’t tell rocks from grenades and were forced to take cover after every throw. By dawn, after eight hours of relentless attacks, only 8 Marines survived — but they had held the position.
This improvised tactic became legendary in Marine Corps oral history, spreading unofficially through the 1st Marine Division and saving lives throughout the rest of the Peleliu campaign. Hill 100 proved that courage, ingenuity, and quick thinking could overcome impossible odds.
