Today we return to the incredible cliffside village of Rocamadour in France, one of the most spectacular and historic places in the Dordogne Valley.
As you saw in our previous video, we parked at the top car park where you normally take the lift through the rock down to the sanctuary. Unfortunately the lift to the lower level wasn’t working… which meant a lot of walking up those famous steps!
We begin our visit at the Sanctuary of Rocamadour, a breathtaking religious complex carved directly into the cliffs. Inside the church is the famous Black Madonna of Rocamadour, a medieval statue that has attracted pilgrims for centuries — although Jane somehow managed to completely miss it!
After exploring the sanctuary we climb down into the village itself and sit on a sunny terrace for a relaxing coffee… when OUT OF NOWHERE a wasp lands in Jane’s hair!
Johnny quickly swipes it away but Jane’s reaction?
“You hit me!” 😂
After the excitement we wander through the medieval streets of Rocamadour, admire the dramatic views over the valley and Johnny attempts to fly the drone… which immediately develops a mind of its own!
Eventually we tackle the long climb back up the steps to the top — Jane might have needed a little push! — before Johnny explores the turrets and viewpoints around the château, where the views over the canyon are absolutely breathtaking.
Rocamadour is one of the most beautiful villages in France, famous for its dramatic cliffside setting, pilgrimage history and stunning medieval architecture.
After an amazing day exploring we head back to the campsite to relax.
Thanks for coming along with us!
🏰 Quick History
Rocamadour dates back to the 12th century and became one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in Europe. The sanctuary clings to the cliffs above the Alzou River gorge, and the Black Madonna statue is believed to have miraculous powers. Above the village sits the Château of Rocamadour, originally built to defend the sanctuary and protect pilgrims.
