Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple in Tamil Nadu is not just the biggest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world, but also one of the most important centres of Sri Vaishnavism. Spread across 156 acres with 7 prakarams and 21 gopurams, this temple functioned like a spiritual city.
During medieval invasions, the temple was attacked and the main idol of Lord Ranganatha was secretly moved out to protect it. For decades, the temple stood without the deity, until Hindu rulers later restored worship and revived the temple.
