Finals are always tough- lots of speedy racers in the heat and only those who earned the finals round by performing in the previous rounds of head to head battles. While I have been racing and winning head to head events for more than 30 years, it is never easy and you want to have the full package. Strategy, speed, right equipment, and, yes, you need luck, or better said, bad luck happens. Who exactly is on your left and right matters, what their mindset is matters, and their in the moment decisions matter. Sometimes you don't have any bad luck and sometimes one bad stroke due to a boat or other paddle in your way causes a string of challenges for you and allows others an open lane for a pass or to pull ahead. I had one very bad luck round in my 2nd round of head to head where my paddle got stuck in the starting block and I almost didn't keep it in my hands when I landed. I got a second push from Scotty at a close pass and the gate bounced around the wrong side of my head. Bad luck, followed by bad luck. I was lucky enough to win the next round to assure I was in the finals and win it all. I have so many memories of past events where there were "moments" that are burnt into my brain. Washington State, Great Falls- DC (numerous times- some crazy runs!), Dowd Chutes- Teva Games, etc.. Such a fun sport.
