After a long awaited time, I finally made a video of this fault, which I’ve had on my Audi A6 3.0 BiTdi , searching the Internet and YouTube I was unable to find anyone else who solved this fault
I thought it was going to cost the price of a new turbo to repair it, but thankfully it’s an easy fix .
What I believe is happened over time is the actuator for the VNT on the turbo works loose and subsequently moves. Closer to the exhaust housing, this shortens the length on the road to the VNT, causing a pressure surge / chuff sound, I believe this is because the turbo is producing boost pressure at idle when the vehicle is selected into drive or reverse.
And moving the actuator back into it natural position and then nipping the bolts back up stopped this fault for me it also completely solved another issue, which I thought was separate, when accelerating at light throttle, the vehicle would come on and off of power, and you could feel it, and this has also completely solved that.
